Home Decor D.I.Y.'s: Ft. Reused Items!

Hello There!

I have been getting subscription boxes for quite a long time now and I hated just throwing out the boxes each month.
I like decorating my home with things I already have, so that I can reuse them for much cheaper.  Multi-purpose decor is the way to go.

Jewelry Organizers
This first box was an old Tory Burch gift box that I now use to store earrings.  I place studs inside of it and hang long earrings on the outside of it.

I have done a similar post in the past, but this is more detailed.

The black box in the back has a sheet of foam in it that I have stuck the earring backs into in order to "hang" up my longer dangly earrings.  You can find foam at craft stores.

Here is a look at my jewelry storage for the pieces I like to keep out on display.  Another trick is to use little bowls, mugs, or teacups to corral bracelets and large rings.
Cups are easy to find and very inexpensive.  Everyone has at least one hanging around the house!
If you don't have any cute enough to store jewelry, you can create some custom designs on cups and mugs from Shutterfly in their home decor spot.

DIY Tray
You can see a more in depth tutorial on how I made this tray here.
I love having this on the top of my drawers to hold things that I use on a daily basis.

Alex 9 Drawer Organizers
I have organized my makeup in my Ikea Alex 9 drawers by using both the lids and bottoms of various boxes.

I also use old boxes to keep all of my hair products.  I have them generally separated by type of product.

Books to Add Height and Interest
I love using books that I already own to decorate around my house.  I try to put books of either like colors or sizes in stacks.
Adding a splash of color to the house here and there creates immediate warmth.  It's also a great alternative.

Boxes to Give Height
This box I used to raise up my calendar and favorite Alice and Olivia mug on my desk.
I don't store anything in the box I basically only used it to allow me to actually see my calendar.

Frame Old Greeting Cards for Art
I bought these cards awhile ago with the intention of framing and hanging them, but if you have cards that you love and can't part with try framing them to add some art to your home.  Wall art adds a lot of character to a room.

Organizing the Bathroom
In my bathroom I reused an old candle jar (in the back), two candle votives, and a subscription box.
The box has feminine hygiene products in it because we don't have any storage under our sink and I did not just want them sitting out.
I store hair ties, cotton swabs, and cotton balls in the three candle holders.

Up-cycled Candle Jars
I have reused a bunch of old candle holders for my makeup brushes. This one in particular I placed a bit of scrapbook paper in to make it a little prettier (you can use wrapping paper or anything really to do this).
I put fake flower petals in the cup to keep the brushes upright, but you can use pebbles or get decorative stones (sold at most craft stores and Target has them in the fake flowers aisle).
Like I said, reuse as much as you can.  Decorations are all around the house, you just need to know how to look for them.

To get the wax out of the candles I use the boil out method, but you can try other ones seen here.

These little candle jars I wrapped in ribbon and washi tape to hole all of the little perfume samples I get from my boxes.
You can see I also have a larger candle jar under two of the little ones to raise them up so I can get to them.

I use the empty jars in my medicine cabinet to group together extra sample products.
On the top I have a jar full of face cleansers.
The bottom I have flossers in one little jar and little toothpaste and floss in the bigger jar.

I just cleaned out this beautiful candle jar that I have to do something with.
I am thinking of putting a battery operated tea light in it because the glass gives off such a pretty glow.

Let me know if you have any ideas for how to reuse any of these items!
